We were so happy to be given the opportunity to be included in such a wonderful event about school meals. We knew that school lunches were important, but we didn’t know that there were so many people working behind the scene making decisions about the type of lunches that are served in our cafeteria.
At the Nourish to Flourish Summit, we met people from all over the world who are involved in this process and we thought that was neat! On the second day of the summit, we chose to be a part of the technology group. In this group we decided that we needed healthy meals but they must be appealing. We also decided that students should be allowed to make more decisions about what they are being served. We strongly believe that if students are given the opportunity to choose their own lunches they will be more excited about participating in school meals.
By attending this summit, we understand the importance of encouraging other students at our school to sign up for FUTP 60, so they too can participate in Plays that would help our school be a healthier place. In the technology group, the students played an important part in creating a prototype for the Food Matters App. It allowed us to collaborate, communicate, imagine and investigate with adults as well as our peers. This is also a part of our STEM habits of mind at our school. We discussed different ways technology can be used to develop healthy meal choices, we participated in skits, and determined that there may be challenges along the way to make this dream a reality.
We are so glad that we had the opportunity to be a part of this School Meals Summit.
