Planning my Fuel Up to Play 60 Kickoff event was a bit harder than I thought it would be. I did not have much help at school for several reasons. This is the first year that FUTP 60 is being run at my high school, so the students were a bit apprehensive about the program and my in school Program Advisor is new as well. I found that the best thing for me to do was to incorporate the Kickoff event with homecoming. Since it was Spirit Week at school, the students were already excited and it made it easier to spread the word. I was able to hang up posters around the school and pass out flyers that I made at home. I also wrote a short morning announcement to be read by the morning news team each day for a week.
The night before the homecoming game the school has a bonfire. During the bonfire, we were able to set up a booth/table where students were able to get information about FUTP 60 and join. We passed out free granola bars, free week long membership passes to a local gym, and free fitness bracelets. Each student that signed up was also entered into a drawing to win one of four prizes. The prizes were a gift card to a sandwich shop, and spa gift card, and one of two yoga mats. The prizes were donated by local businesses who wanted to take part and help.
On Friday morning, the names were drawn live during the morning news and students collected their prizes. Overall I think the Kickoff event went well. We were able to get just under 20 new team members and I have a feeling that we will get more!
