Our school highly supports Fuel Up to Play 60 and they do so because it helps and encourages kids to eat healthy and be active!
We started our Play 60 program this year with a great Kickoff during Open House in August. We asked all students to enter our raffle, which asked them to list their favorite healthy snack that they could bring to school this year. A lot of them really had to think very hard, which was good. Every kid that participated was entered into a drawing for prizes like Packers gear or water bottles with their names, and 2 students won healthy snack parties for their whole class. We also had our recess carts set up alongside of us. We used some of the money from our Fuel Up to Play 60 grant to fill the carts up with cool stuff like new balls, ropes, Frisbees, bats, and bases – we didn’t have many of those before and what we did have was not good. Everyone was really excited to get back to school and play with all of our new stuff!
Secondly, we have started our Open Gym Nights after school. We will have 4 this year and they include a healthy snack and some talks about eating well, and then an hour of being active with your friends. We love them!
Also, last year, our school purchased a portable Gaga Ball Pit with our Fuel Up to Play 60 grant. Last year we only used it during Open Gym Nights, but this year we asked the principal and she let us keep it outside for all of fall – 2 months already! We had tons of kids playing in it for every recess and because everyone had so much fun – we get to put it back outside in the spring too!
Finally, we plan to use the rest of our Fuel Up to Play 60 grant money this year for incentives for kids to participate in two more healthy eating challenges. The Ambassadors are going to plan them for the whole school to participate in and all of the entries will get to be hung up on the wall leading to our lunchroom. We are going to make posters and advertise our contest everywhere so that we are all talking about healthy food choices.
This is how our school uses Fuel Up to Play 60 and how it helps our students eat healthier and stay more active every single day!
