My experience in Washington, DC was unbelievable! I’m still in awe at how much we learned and how much we all got to see. I went there with the intention of simply learning how to improve FUTP 60 in my school, but while there I truly believe that I have found my niche in life. I was so inspired by what the USDA staff members had to say and now I really want to do an internship in DC one day. I had no idea how involved the government is with what we eat both in school and at home. I left Washington with so many new ideas that I can’t wait to implement.
It was great to see my fellow Student Ambassadors, Grace and Viren again and I look forward to our next get together. The three of us work so well together which made everything go smoothly. I wished that we had at least one more day to stay and pick their minds a bit more. I will definitely keep in touch with the staff that I met there.
Anyone who did not know what FUTP 60 was before we arrived definitely knows who we are now. Everything was absolutely wonderful and I hope to do it again one day. Sitting with the USDA Administrator, Brandon Lipp, helped me to understand how important the “My Plate” concept is but it also made me realize that this is where a lot of the food waste comes in. Once my grant money arrives I plan to figure out a way to eliminate that food waste while still meeting the school standards.
I cannot thank FUTP 60 enough for this wonderful and life changing experience. Not only did I learn more about food and nutrition as well as health and wellness, but I also learned more about myself and presenting myself and ideas to others.
