I wanted to talk to you about how to keep Fuel Up to Play 60 active during the winter. It can get tough. Last year our FUTP 60 team went from 54 to 12 students. We wanted to think of ways to keep it going. That is when our school made our intramural program stronger and made our Running Club more sort of guide to FUTP 60. You could always get a bunch of students after school to play a huge game of kickball, or dodgeball, or capture the flag, or even just some pickup basketball.

This year we have designated all the different winter months into Plays. For example, December is Brain Break month. We also have FUTP 60 representatives from each homeroom that will participate in a training session, put on by our community’s FUTP 60 Board. Every other month we have a Family Fitness Night, which has both cool healthy eating activities and fun indoor games. Here are a few of our schools favorite P.E. games with a quick description:

  • Watusi: Watusi is a dodgeball game in the sense that you get into two teams and throw the ball at someone they are out. In Watusi the aim of the game is to knock down three pins on the other player’s side while defending your side.
  • Dodge: In doctor dodge there is one doctor that hides behind a soccer net and tries not to get hit with the assistance of the nurse. The aim is to get the doctor out. You also have classic dodgeball while trying to get others out. The doctor has to rescue the people that are out.
  • Crazy Kickball: Crazy Kickball is kickball with fancy rules that make it…crazy! Some rules could be you can run to third or first after you kick, or whenever someone gets a homerun, the next person HAS to run. I recommend no more than three rules at first and to use mats at bases.

You can always stick to the classics like Capture the Flag, Flag Football, Dodgeball, or Volleyball.

The bottom line is as long as you are exercising while having fun…YOU WIN!
