How do I even start to explain how much fun this event was? Myself along with two other FUTP 60 Ambassadors from the Northeast were invited to take part in an amazing workshop in New York at the Lebron Restaurant Supply. While there we had the opportunity to meet and speak with celebrity chef Jason Smith.
We heard from Jeff Joiner about working as a team with the cafeteria staff, teachers, and students. He explained his version of the Five Characteristics of Superheroes:
- People rarely plan to be superheroes
- Superheroes are always misunderstood
- Superheroes work in teams
- Superheroes stand for something
- Superheroes are constantly training and improving
After that we heard from Trevor Bently about visual merchandising and how to make the food displays more appealing to students. During this segment, we were given the opportunity to view different displays that were created by the staff at the event. It was great to see them all working together and funny to see the friendly competition between the different teams.
One of the main topics discussed was the Breakfast After the Bell program in schools. While my school does not offer this program yet, it will be great to get it up and running for next school year. The final speaker of the day was Joetta Clark Diggs; most people know her as being the daughter of Joe Clark who was depicted by Morgan Freeman in the movie “Lean On Me.” She spoke to us all about overcoming challenges and working hard.
Once the event was over my mind was full of great ideas to take back to my school for planning and implementation. I think that next school year is going to be awesome for FUTP 60 in my school and I can’t wait!
