blades-juv-aa-dec2013My name is Josie. I am in 6th grade and I am a Fuel Up to Play 60 leader at my school. I am from Neenah, Wisconsin. I love doing Fuel Up to Play 60 activities in school because it lets me reach out to sports that I might have never gotten to try. As a group, the Fuel Up to Play 60 committee tries to encourage kids to get exercise and eat healthy every day. One of my favorite Fuel Up to Play 60 days was when I got to actually lead an activity. Apart from doing Fuel Up to Play 60 activities at school, my favorite sport is ice skating.

When I was 8 years old I learned about a special kind of skating called synchronized skating (like synchronized swimming). Synchronized skating is a group of girls and sometimes boys doing the same steps at the same time to music. There are competitions all over the world. It is very important that you work as a team.

I got a chance to try synchronized skating (synchro for short). I liked it right away so I tried out for the team. I’ve been on the same team for 4 years, moving up 3 levels throughout the years. This year I moved up another level onto a team that can qualify for nationals!

It was really tough for me at first to move up onto this team. It still is hard but I am getting better and not giving up. Sometimes during the beginning of the season coming home from the practices I thought that I was letting down the team. Moving up to a new team is tough because there are girls that have been on the team for a few years and there were only 3 other girls moving up with me. I continued to practice with the team and on my own and started to get more confident with myself. Staying positive and keeping my head up started to erase the thought of letting my team down from my head. Once that thought was completely gone I actually got better! Now we are in the middle of our season and we really hope we qualify for nationals.

I’ve seen a few videos of you skating from your mom, and it is so much fun to watch you and your team. Keep up the confidence–you’re a hard worker and really talented!
