The “Make Your Move Kick Off” assembly at Hulet Elementary School was cool because I knew many of the kids and they knew me or one of the athletes. Since they looked up to us, they all got involved. It also helped get the students involved since the teachers were participating and doing the dancing and activities with us. It was good to come back to my old school and help the students I knew from last year!
It kind of gave me butterflies talking in front of the teachers at the assembly, but as the assembly progressed my worries eased up and it was fun! The assembly gave me opportunities to work on my speaking skills as an Ambassador as well as modeling to other students about being healthy and active.
I had a lot of kids who said “Thanks” and “It was really fun!” I heard comments like this both at the assembly and outside at our fitness day. I really enjoyed everything about the week. It was a really good opportunity to work with the kids at Hulet along with the high school athletes.
We came up with the Fitness Week idea because we wanted to show kids that spending 60 minutes a day being active is easy and fun. My Program Advisor worked with the principal and the other Ambassadors in our school to plan the Fitness Week. We looked for new equipment to buy that kids would have fun using on our Fitness Friday and throughout the year. Some of the activities we chose were sand volleyball, badminton, cage ball, Frisbees, hula hoops, and foursquare. Each teacher chose a station and monitored the activity with the help of the Ambassadors. Students picked an activity they wanted to participate in and played as long as they wanted at each station. Students were enthusiastic and enjoyed the time being active!
The experience for me has been an opportunity to be a positive role model for healthy eating and exercise. These activities are helping me become more of a leader in planning and preparing for other Fuel Up to Play 60 events. Activities like these give me opportunities to work on my skills as a leader and a Fuel Up to Play 60 State Ambassador. I look forward to holding more events like these!
