State Ambassadors on The Chew!

On March 5, three state Fuel Up to Play 60 Ambassadors headed to New York City for once-in-a-lifetime event: taking part in a taping of ABC’s The Chew, talking about school breakfast and making awesome new recipes. March 5, 2014: a day I’ll NEVER forget. I had the opportunity of a lifetime. One of my biggest dreams came true; I got to appear on national TV! I was invited to appear on one of my favorite cooking shows, The Chew! While I was there I was reunited with two other Ambassadors I knew from the Summit, Corey and Lily. One of the coolest parts of my trip was first coming into the studio, and being able to see what happens behind the scenes. We got to sit in the green room and meet everyone, including the hosts of The Chew. Then you will never believe what happened next. We got to meet the one and only Victor Cruz of the New York Giants!

When we actually got on the set I was amazed at how cozy it felt. The hosts were so nice and the audience was always smiling. There was no need to be afraid or nervous; it was just like having a conversation with your friends. After we had done a little practicing, the cameras started taping and we were on!

I had SO MUCH FUN on the show. We first answered some questions from host and Chef Carla Hall and Victor Cruz. Then we each made a different breakfast (for the theme of the show “Breakfast Basics” and the latest campaign “It Starts With School Breakfast”). My recipe was Peaches and Cream Waffle Dunkers. Yum! We all laughed and just had a great time.

Later, after the show, we took some selfies and pictures with the hosts and Victor Cruz, and got autographs from them all too! In the end, this was probably the most amazing experience of my entire life. I will never ever forget that day, all thanks to Fuel Up to Play 60. If you just stay active and eat right amazing things can happen. Eat Healthy. Get Active. Make a difference.

Being on The Chew was unlike any experience I have ever had. It was so cool for me on a personal level because when I get older I want to be a part of the TV and film business, so it was really cool to see an actual TV show set for once. The people working on the show were extremely nice, especially the hosts! They were just downright hilarious! Meeting Victor Cruz was so awesome. He was a really nice guy and it wasn’t intimidating at all to speak to him. It seemed like the whole thing was a dream, and I’m glad it wasn’t, because it was an amazing, and incredible experience.

After a year of going on some amazing trips, my mom and I ventured to New York City for the greatest trip so far. We arrived on Tuesday, March 4, checked into our hotel and got settled, then went out to explore the city. Since we were only a few blocks from Times Square, we went and did some shopping. That night we had dinner with the rest of the group and discussed the filming of The Chew episode which we three kids would be on! The next day we woke up at 5 in the morning (ughh it was a painful time, I know) and got ready for the big day. At 6:30am all of us met in the lobby and took a van to the studio. Once we arrived, we were taken through a special entrance and then to the green room where we would sit and watch the show from backstage. After a while, Victor Cruz (the wide receiver for the New York Giants) came in and sat down to sign some footballs and talk to us. After watching the first part of the show, they led us out to the set. It was during a commercial break so we got to just kind of hang around and talk to the other hosts. After the segment had begun, and Grace was doing her part, it hit me that I was about to be on National TV! They came over to me and asked me a question and I answered feeling like this situation was very surreal. After the segment was over, we took some pictures and then went home. It was only later that night when I saw the segment that I realized, I did pretty okay!
