On December 12, Fuel Up to Play 60 Student Ambassadors, students and teachers from my middle school in Wisconsin had a blast at the First Annual Ugly Sweater Run. One of our Plays this year has been the 100 Mile Club so this was a great way to support that Play! We also have been working with a group of parents who wanted to raise money for recess equipment.
First, we gathered in the cafeteria to pay a fee of $5 which all went toward the new recess equipment. Students also asked family and friends to support the cause through fundraising. Though we asked everyone to wear their ugliest Christmas sweaters, we also had a special request for one of the teachers. Our math teacher, the biggest Chicago Bears fan in Wisconsin, was asked to run the race as the greatest Green Bay Packers fan! This would allow us to raise an additional $100 for recess equipment and he did! He wore a Packers jersey, face paint, and pants and all of the students and staff were applauding him!
Students were very enthusiastic bragging that they had the ugliest sweaters, they would finish first, or they would win the top fundraiser prize! All of the students received race packets with race bibs, pins, stickers, prizes and handouts. After that, the students headed off to the gym where they learned course rules and took amazing selfies with our Wellness teacher and Program Advisor.
Finally, the fun began! Students got ready to line up for the race. “Runners take your mark! Go!” yelled our Program Advisor as the students with their baggy sweaters took off to follow the social studies teacher (who was on his bike). Spectators were cheering on all of the racers. Everyone ran 1.2 miles. Timing took place. Trophies were handed out to the top male and female runners. Trophies were also given to the student with the ugliest sweater and top fundraiser. We voted for the ugliest sweater winner by placing a sticker on what we thought was the ugliest. A total of $570 was raised by the participants!
After the race, students headed inside to grab hot chocolate and Fuel Up to Play 60 Ambassador Courtney’s “Berry Banana Blast Breakfast Bars.” Raffle numbers were called to give many additional donated prizes. The students and staff said they had a wonderful and amazing experience! Emma, a 6th grade active Ambassador for our program said, “It was a fun event and it had everyone at school talking about the ugly sweater that they were planning on wearing. It was great to see how many people showed up to participate. I thought it was a really creative way to get people active.”
The First Annual Ugly Sweater Run was a great success!
