Hey everyone! Alexia here, the new State Ambassador for South Dakota. I am very excited about joining the Fuel Up to Play 60 team and all of the fun that comes with it.
You know what else I’m excited about….spring! Spring might not be that big of a deal to people that in other parts of the country but in South Dakota spring means temperatures allow us to go outside without the risk of frostbite! Our winters are very cold and that means we don’t get a lot of time to play outside. There are times when it is too cold to even go outside for recess and we are forced to have quiet time inside instead. This makes our school days very long when we have to sit still all day.
My favorite part of enjoying the spring weather outside means the chance to play a game called “Popcorn” with my friends at recess. In the game of Popcorn the object is to tag your opponent before they tag you. We play on a set of parallel bars and ‘pop’ over the bars by using our arms to push up and our core to swing our legs over the bars as we advance to the opposing end. It is a very fast paced game that requires a lot of strength. It really gets our hearts racing.
At home I enjoy having hula-hoop contests with my family. You should see my parents try to hula-hoop. It is hilarious! I also spend a lot of time with my neighborhood friends on their trampoline, roller-blading with my sister or doing workouts in the park with my family. Yep, workouts in the park! Have you ever used a picnic table to bench jumps or tri-cep dips? It’s a lot of fun to see how many you can do in 30 seconds and challenge others to beat you.
Right now I have also been going for long bike rides and coaching my mom as she runs for her training for a half-marathon. She says I’m the best coach because I talk the whole time and keep her mind off the running and I keep her pace strong as she tries to keep up with me on my bike.
So you see it doesn’t really matter if you are outside and focused on completing a work out like biking 8 miles or if you are challenging your dad to a hula-hoop contest. Get outside and have some fun and let the spring weather put a spring in your step!
