Before the New Year, everyone usually sets a goal. The goal is normally to get better at something. I have read that only 8% of people can accomplish their New Year’s Resolution goal. How about instead of setting a new goal, you continue working on an old goal to make sure that it becomes sustainable? Sustainable means something that is “able to be maintained at a certain rate or level”.

As a result of the Fuel Up to Play 60 Plays this school year, we have implemented two new programs at our school that I would like to become sustainable. I am an 8th grader this year and will be moving on to high school next year. These are good programs and I don’t want to see them go away!

One program is “Walking Wednesdays”. This is where all of the students (on Wednesday) have an opportunity to walk and talk with their friends in the gym before the start of their school day for 15 minutes rather than stand around. We hand out incentive prizes, and it is part of the 100 Mile Club.

The second program we have implemented is our new “Second Chance Breakfast” opportunity open to all students. If they forgot about breakfast earlier that day, this is where they can just head on out to the hallway near their classroom after first hour and grab breakfast from the food cart. This cart has all of the five main food groups. It has been a great success so far. I see many students using this every day.

In order to keep these programs sustained, there are steps we will need to follow:
– Make sure everyone has the same vision of keeping these programs
– Determine what exactly about these programs is or isn’t working and we want to keep or change
– Make sure we have a team who will continue it as we do now
– Come up with strategies on how we keep the Play going / how to keep the students interested
– Develop our steps to keep it going
– Lastly, communicate the plan to others who may be able to help

Whether you’re setting a new goal for 2016 or building on an old goal, I hope you have a successful new year!
