Being from Canton, Ohio, football is the biggest sport around. Canton is where the NFL was born, and is home to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. When I heard about FUTP 60, I came up with the idea of an After School Spring Flag Football League. With the help of a few other students, we were able to successfully organize an 8 team league that gave 80 students the opportunity to get physically active.
Right after school, students would walk behind the school and start playing on a 60 yard field. Games would last from 2:50 to 3:15. Teams had 10 players, each team had 1 Head Coach and 1 Assistant Coach. Teams had to have 5 boys and 5 girls to make games even. Coaches were students who volunteered and enjoyed playing the game just as much as they loved teaching it to other students. Each player paid $6 for a FUTP 60 shirt of their team color. We also had a Player of the Week which was voted on by the coaches. Player of the Week won a $5 gift card.
Overall, the league lasted 7 weeks with a championship game at the end (Beginning of April to the end of May). It was a great success and we’ll definitely do it again this upcoming school year. If you love football and are looking for a way to make a difference in your school, then this is a great way to get started!
