I was invited to participate in the annual meeting of the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition (PCFSN) on May 16, 2016 in Washington, DC. The day started off at the Hubert Humphrey Building where the PCFSN was having their Annual Meeting. The Council consists of a number of athletes, physicians, and nutritionists, and I was excited to meet them in person. I also got the opportunity to join them for a panel discussion and share my thoughts on what the Council should be doing in the upcoming years to involve more schools and students in their programs.

After the discussion, our FUTP 60 team joined the Council members for a private luncheon, and the fun continued. We got to meet them in a closer setting and were able to learn more about the work of the Council. From there, we walked over to the U.S. Department of Agriculture housed in the Whitten building. We were also able to get a part of our 60 minutes of activity for the day covered with our walk and managed to stop outside the Capitol to capture some fun moments on camera! At the USDA, we met the Secretary of Agriculture who gave us a personal tour of his office. We also met the Undersecretary and the Deputy Undersecretary of Agriculture. What a privilege it was! Then he sat down with us for an informal discussion about our accomplishments at our schools. It was an amazing day and I had a blast! My experience in DC is one that I will cherish forever!!!

I was so honored to be a part of the Annual President’s Council Meeting. My job at the meeting was to make a presentation about the impact of youth involvement in healthy eating and physical activity at schools, and how students respond to youth leadership. Also I got to be a part of the panel on youth leadership. This was an eye-opening experience. I look back and realize how much students’ opinions matters. I couldn’t believe that I could communicate my opinion to amazing leaders like Drew Brees, Dominique Dawes, Jason Collins, Michelle Kwan, and so many more amazing and influential people. I’m so thankful for the experience!

Recently I had the opportunity to represent Fuel Up to Play 60 in Washington, DC. It was an amazing experience. I also feel very lucky to be part of the President’s Council meeting for a second time! It was great to hear all of the accomplishments the group has made. I was also very proud of Abby and Ani for the remarks they made at the meeting. They represented FUTP 60 very well and showed how much we all care about being healthy and helping other kids.

I really liked going to the USDA office and meeting everyone there. Secretary Vilsack was very friendly and excited to hear from our experiences. I appreciate that they want the student perspectives on school lunch and breakfast. I think they have some really good ideas to improve school food. I also liked being able to share about my school. Overall the whole day was fun and worthwhile, so again thank you for the opportunity!
