Even though a lot of people think going back to school is dreadful, you can make it fun by adding topics that will interest everyone. So me and a couple of friends got together and we came up with an idea to introduce a changed spirit week, which will include one day all about Fuel Up to Play 60, wearing your favorite NFL/Fuel Up to Play 60 gear. We think this idea will pump up some more students’ interests in Back to School.

Things I want to bring back to my school this year are: physical activity breaks, a breakfast cook-off, the Snack Smarter in School Play, healthy school lunches, and Build-Your-Own Breakfast. With that in mind I’m going to talk to my principal first off and talk about my ideas. To go further into healthy school lunches, we’re going to sit down with the head lunch lady and discuss what foods we can adjust to make our cafeteria food healthier. We could start surveys and samples in the cafeteria of healthier foods. Also, along with our third-period snack breaks, we could add in the physical activity breaks which could include five jumping jacks, 10 second toe touch, arm stretches etc. for 30 seconds to 1 minute. I’m also hoping we can monitor our snack breaks or provide healthy snacks, maybe once a week, because that could also promote healthy eating and how delicious it actually is. But, also because the snacks we bring are supposed to be healthy but not all the kids are bringing in healthy snacks. Build-Your-Own Breakfast and Breakfast Cook-Off are two great ways that can provide a way to promote delicious healthy choices in a breakfast because many of our kids don’t eat breakfast in the morning. So hopefully like twice a year we can have a Build-Your-Own Breakfast and maybe once a year have Breakfast Cook-Off for the school and that will show kids the different variety of tasty breakfast items that they can make in their home as well.

There are many ideas that I am planning to bring back to my school from the Summit:
1. A “make your own original salsa” activity (inspired by Chef Remmi), which would be a great back to school kick off event.
2. A spin-off of the Fuel Greatness videos (to use later in the year), which could be done by homeroom teams.
3. I would love to bring in some local athletes, coaches, doctors and possibly nutrition experts to speak at an assembly.
4. I am also aiming to see if we schedule all the students to have a chance weekly to log on to the FUTP 60 website to be able to track their activity and healthy eating choices. My school has a required CAPS (computer applications) class and I am going to see if that would be a possibility once a week during that class.
5. I am hoping to get our school FUTP 60 program some publicity and use the media/interview skills that I mentioned earlier. This would hopefully get the word out and inspire others to start the program at their school as well.
Remember: Define your “limits”, Surpass your “limits”, and realize you have “NO LIMITS”….you can do it. BE THE CHANGE!

It’s inspiring to see so many terrific student ideas for ways to spread healthy messages and encourage others to take action. I love Cat’s idea for students to track their weekly activity and healthy food choices; I do this and it really helps me to stay committed. It’s great that the FUTP website has a spot for students to do this.
