After spending six hours in my classroom, I have just about reached my breaking point. With exams, homework, and class work, I no longer have the attention span to remain focused. As I turn my head to look out my classroom windows, I see nothing but a beautiful, sunny day in Massachusetts. The sun is shining down on the pavement that I spend time playing street hockey on and the dirt from the baseball diamond I enjoy running around on is glowing from the sun’s rays. But, since at my grade level recess is no longer allowed, and without any breaks throughout the long school day except for lunch, I am confined to my desk and chair for a bit longer. With this in mind, the Fuel Up to Play 60 program has encouraged me to be both active and healthy, whenever I get the chance. These two key components of my life keep me going during my mentally-strenuous but physically-unchallenging school days.
Even though I may be active and healthy outside of the classroom, I feel that it is important to bring my healthy and active lifestyle into my own school, as well as schools across the nation. Though it may be hard to incorporate these into a typical school day, I have come up with some innovative ideas that I feel will help my fellow students, along with others, understand the importance of being engaged in wellness activities both in school and out.
Though the word “wellness” comes with its fair share of definitions, I personally define wellness as being in great physical shape, along with maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Though I think I have been able to live up to this myself, I feel that some of my classmates and students across the country could be helped by being more familiar with how to properly exercise and maintain a healthy and balanced diet. This is a big issue to tackle, but I feel that there are a few simple ways to change this.
What I find most effective for my generation is learning through videos and posters. With the variety of technology sources out there, videos are easily available and can paint a clear and vivid picture of what is good and what is bad for your health. For example, if someone were to watch a creative/viral video of someone eating unhealthy food every day and not exercising vs. the same person doing things right with different results, it could be a great example of the benefits of being a healthy person. If the video were done in the right way, kids seeing it would talk about it, share it and use it as an example. I also feel posters are a great way to spread the word about how to live well. With the addition of eye-catching posters in school hallways, students, along with faculty, parents, and other visitors could see how to be active and healthy at any age. Flashy posters featuring tips on being active and healthy would be a helpful tool for not only my school, but others as well.
Though these ideas can help promote wellness, there is another easy and accessible way to show how wellness is “cool” – motivation and encouragement! I am a HUGE video gamer and could spend hours on the couch with my eyes glued to the TV, but I always motivate myself to find time to be outside playing street hockey and lacrosse, or even throwing a few baseballs around. When I’m on the ice playing hockey, my teammates encourage me to keep going, and it makes me a better player. So, here’s my chance to pay it forward. I encourage YOU to be active, be healthy, and play 60. And, encourage your classmates to do it too. Take it from me, it works!
