Hi my name is Lane, I’m in 7th grade and I’m a Nebraska State Ambassador for Fuel Up to Play 60. What that means is that my job is to inform others about FUTP 60 and to help them make healthier decisions.

I have many jobs to do. One example is that I get to go around Nebraska and give speeches about the program. I’ve done three talks so far: One in Rising City at the largest dairy farm in NE, one in Omaha at the Nebraska Association of School Boards, and in Kearney at the SHAPE Conference. Also, every once in a while, I have phone conferences to share ideas with other State Ambassadors from across the country. I also presented to my class to encourage my classmates to enroll in the program, and you can click here to watch me on the news!

While working with our teacher Mr. Danley this year, our school started a Fuel Up to Play 60 Committee. The 6 students representing all three grades include: Alie H., Tyler B., Grace B., Akosh N., Kate S., and I. We meet and talk about things we could do to make our school a healthier place. One thing that we are planning on doing this year is a Color Run.

Every school year, Fuel Up to Play 60 schools focus on nutrition and fitness. These focus areas are supported by something called Plays from the FUTP 60 Playbook, just like a play in football. For this year, I have helped support the nutrition and fitness Plays at our school by helping our teachers with tallying the results from our challenges focused on hunger and brain breaks. I also helped promote events by putting up posters related to the Challenges in our classroom pods.

Last year, we had a MAD (Make a Difference) fair. We got in groups and chose a topic to promote a cause that impacts people locally. My partner and I chose obesity. Then we chose Fuel Up to Play 60 as our organization to promote. We raised $100. We also had a fruit stand containing two different types of oranges. The oranges were a hit!!!

Being the State Ambassador has been an awesome opportunity!!! I’ve gotten to go to Chicago for the National Student Ambassador Summit, and I’ve gotten to go to the State Summit at Memorial Stadium. Both times, I’ve been able to talk to other students and trade ideas.

Overall, I’ve had a great experience. Hanging with new people. Making friends. Having the opportunity to change people’s lives, and the best yet, being able to make people smile.
