“Yum!” This word was heard throughout the room as the Fuel Up to Play 60 team at our middle school taste tested the food that would be served for future breakfasts. Because of eating breakfast, this group of students is always ready for the beginning of the school day.

The Fuel Up to Play 60 team spoke with cafeteria managers about the quality of the cafeteria food, the nutritional value of the meals, and most importantly- the attendance at breakfasts. The newly founded Fuel Up to Play 60 team also became a student advisory council to help the cafeteria management improve the meals. We learned about the nutritional value of the food that they served and ways the cafeteria was helping to keep everyone healthy.

We got to participate in taste tests where we tried new, nutritious food that would be added to the menu for school meals if the food met the team’s approval. To my amazement, the zucchini bread was really delicious. Another example was the mini bagels with flavored cream cheese. Thanks to our farmers for making the milk that was needed for the cream cheese and for the milk to wash it all down!

Additionally, we discussed National School Breakfast Week (March 7 – 11). The cafeteria is trying to have the majority of the students come for breakfast this week. The Fuel Up to Play 60 team is planning on having bagged breakfasts on tables outside the cafeteria for Grab and Go breakfasts. We also plan on having posters all around the school promoting breakfasts. Another plan we have is having prizes that you have a chance to win for attending breakfasts. If you have any more good ideas to promote breakfasts, please post them in the comments section below because that can help everyone. After saying our opinions on other matters within the cafeteria, the Fuel Up to Play 60 meeting ended.

I looked around as we left, and was proud of how far the Fuel Up to Play 60 program at my middle school had gone from the beginning of the year- nonexistent to a growing, active group. We are going to make a difference during National School Breakfast Week. We are going to help our fellow students join us in saying “yum” to food that will fuel them up to do great at school.

Hopefully, you will also take part in fueling up your fellow students during National Breakfast Week so they can Play 60!
