For years, I always had a fear of public speaking. Whether it was presenting a project or PowerPoint in front my class or simply just giving the lunch ladies my lunch number (not literally, but you get the point), public speaking has always been a struggle for me. One day my physical education teacher helped me to get over that struggle. Here’s a short story on how I overcame my fear of public speaking.

One morning in the 7th grade as I was walking the down the hall from breakfast, my PE teacher Mrs. Perkins stopped me and said, “I see a leader in you and I want you to be a Fuel Up to Play 60 Ambassador for our school.” At the time I didn’t know too much about the program, but I agreed to do it anyway.

Once I started to learn more about the program and its mission, it made me want to get involved. Seeing how students led the program and how students my age were changing their schools made me want to step up and change my school. But there was one obstacle: my fear of public speaking. So I talked to my dad about it and he said it was a great opportunity. I got involved with Fuel Up to Play 60 and it has brought me so far. Fuel Up to Play 60 granted me many opportunities that I never would have had if I had let my fears keep me from getting involved. Fuel Up to Play 60 has helped me to better my public speaking and leadership skills. It has helped me grow as an individual. It allowed me to see and do things I never did before. It allowed me to meet people and friends from all over who are very supportive and helpful.

One person I met through Fuel Up to Play 60 who inspired me and was very helpful was my team leader at the Student Ambassador Summit, Tyler. He was a really great team leader.

Now I am a National Ambassador for Fuel Up to Play 60. I am a 9th grader at a new school but thanks to Ms. Perkins and the supportive people I met I’m equipped with the materials I need to start a new program. At the 2014 Summit in Texas, I was interviewed and filmed on how Fuel Up to Play 60 helped me. It was a great experience and opportunity for me to encourage students around the world.

I encourage you all to never let your fears keep you from doing something you want to do. I encourage you to get involved with Fuel Up to Play 60 and BE the change you wish to see in your school, state, or even country. You can do it. I know you can….I did it! At least try, and try again. Remember that you must fail before you can succeed. Trust me I know I failed MANY times before I got to where I am now. Fear isn’t worth the time but joining Fuel Up to Play 60 is. Get connected. Get involved. Join Fuel Up to Play 60!

I think this encourages children that are scared and shy to break out of their shells and get fit and help others get fit and make new friends.

There are 4 ways you can handle fear.

You can go over it, under it, or around it but if you are ever to put fear behind you, you must walk straight through it.

Once you put fear behind you. Leave it there.
