My dad is a dairy farmer, and he is the hardest working person I know! Many people think that being a dairy farmer just means milking cows – but it is so much more.

Since the health and comfort of the cows is his number one concern, a dairy farmer often finds himself in the role of a veterinarian. I remember the time that my favorite cow, Strawberry, broke her leg. My sisters and I were devastated because she would be leaving the herd. Our dad had compassion on us, and her, and put a cast on her leg. He was a hero that day!

My dad is also a businessman. He uses a computer and a smart phone everyday to track the production and health of his cows as well as the price of feed, fuel, and milk. And yes, he also uses his phone to send us an occasional Snap Chat of what he is working on that day. He makes an important contribution to our economy by hiring several employees and spending his money supporting local businesses.

My dad is also a caretaker of the environment. He uses the latest scientific research to preserve precious resources like soil and water. He cares for the earth and in turn, the earth takes care of him.

My dad helps to feed the world. He produces natural, fresh, wholesome products that feed our nation. One cup of milk provides 9 essential nutrients – all for just pennies per ounce – which makes milk one of the best nutritional values in the supermarket.

Although his job is extremely important and very diverse, I know that if you were to ask my dad: “What is the most important thing you do?” He would answer “Teaching my kids to be hard workers and to be a positive influence in the world. That is the reason for everything I do.”

Thanks for all of the great life lessons dad!
