Students pose at ISWSB photo booth (4)

Student Ambassadors across the country spent the month of March celebrating Fuel Up to Play 60’s It Starts With School Breakfast campaign in their schools and communities. Check out all the ways they made healthy changes in their schools, then share your school breakfast story in the comments!

Trinity here – Texas State Ambassador. I want to tell you about what we have going on at my school for It Starts With School Breakfast. Our Fuel Up to Play 60 team hosted a Healthy Breakfast Recipe Round-Up. Students submitted “cooking show” videos of their favorite breakfast recipe. The Culinary Arts department of the high school and Robin Plotkin from Robin’s Bite are helping to judge the videos to pick finalists. The student body will vote for their favorite recipe from the list of finalists to decide the ultimate winner. The grand prize winner’s recipe will be featured in a school-wide healthy breakfast taste test. The grand prize winner will also receive a football signed by Dallas Cowboys linebacker Sean Lee and other prizes. Every student that submitted a recipe received a Fuel Up to Play 60 cup, keychain and certificate of participation. We had around 22 submissions, with around 25 students participating. The best part though is that the WHOLE SCHOOL gets to be involved by viewing the video and choosing the ultimate winner, then participating in the taste test. We’ve also talked to our student nutrition department and they are going to prepare the samples for us. Depending on the chosen recipe it may become part of the normal breakfast rotation!

Zhanna G. Huddle PhotoFor It Starts With School Breakfast, I have started a “Health Minute” during Monday morning announcements at school and I plan to talk about healthy breakfast facts. I will make sure it is interesting so people will understand how important breakfast is. I hope my Health Minutes can make a difference in my school.
Be healthy, be happy, and eat a healthy breakfast!

My school came out with the “Golden Ticket” idea. For “Golden Ticket”, we took grab and go items and put gold stickers on the bottom. If you got one, you won Fuel Up to Play 60 highlighters that are really cool! For It Starts With School Breakfast, we served parfaits with yogurt, fruit, and granola so we could do our best to get more students to try breakfast. This got us all good feedback, everyone should try it!

To participate in the It Starts with School Breakfast campaign, I led my team for a Grab-n-Go Breakfast photo booth! Erin, a representative from the New England Dairy Council, helped me get this idea off the ground and attended the event. I worked with my team and with Erin to plan this event. The day before the event, I went on the school news to promote it and made sure that there was an announcement at the end of that day reminding students about it. Social media was used to advertise the event too – I made posts to Instagram, Twitter and Facebook. Finally the day of our event came! I had to get to school early to help set up. If you bought school breakfast you could get your picture taken in front of a backdrop with props, including an inflatable cow! If you got your picture taken you got a prize. There were mini footballs, pens, and key chains! I was so shocked at how many people bought school breakfast that morning! My team was there too! They helped me out a lot and the event wouldn’t have been the same without them there! My local dairy council provided me a lot of support with the photo booth and prizes. My It Starts with School Breakfast event was a hit in my school, and I hope yours was too!

When I found out that many students don’t start their day with breakfast, I was shocked! For my breakfast event I wanted to raise awareness of the importance of breakfast and to find out the reasons why students skip the most important meal of the day. I decided to send out a survey to all students asking them if they eat school breakfast and what would make school breakfast more appealing to them. If the students filled out the survey, they received a coupon for a free smoothie and UBR cookie. We had a lot of students participate! I also feel that I received a lot of valuable information that I can take back to my Fuel Up to Play 60 team. The majority of students who don’t eat school breakfast said that they eat at home. Other students said they didn’t have time and some students said that they couldn’t afford it. I will be sharing the suggestions of what would make school breakfast more appealing with my kitchen manager. Overall, I feel my event was a success! Student voices were heard and my kitchen manager even said that the breakfast participation numbers were up, which means fewer students started their day hungry! YAY!

We have free breakfast for everyone at my school. It doesn’t matter who you are…if you’re hungry, it’s good to know there’s something waiting for you when you get off the bu.
