Starting FUTP 60 at a New School

I wanted share my experience with trying to start FUTP 60 in my new middle school. I thought there was already a FUTP 60 program in the school. I was expecting everything to be set and ready for me to come in and kick off the program. Unfortunately, after talking to one of the people we thought was in charge of the FUTP 60 program at the school, my mom and I realized there was no program.

At first I felt discouraged. My mom talked with my previous Program Advisor, Ms. Reynolds, and discussed how it was up to me to start a FUTP 60 program. I had to become more of a leader and take control. I had to put into action some of the tools and skills I had acquired during the FUTP 60 Student Ambassador Summit this year. My mom said that she would help me talk with teachers and get the ball rolling.

I thought if I joined Student Council it would be a great avenue for other students and staff to be involved in FUTP 60. I soon got accepted in Student Council, and in the process found my first Program Advisor! One of the teachers who runs the Student Council Team is Mrs. Hess. She is very excited to start this program and can’t wait!

After we got Mrs. Hess on board and signed up, we found out that my health teacher wanted to be involved in FUTP 60. What a bonus! My Midwest Dairy Council liaison, Robyn, said she was already talking to my Health teacher Mr. Staponski. I felt so happy that I had the support of my local Dairy Council and I wasn’t doing this all alone! Mr. Staponski is so excited to be a part of this program and really get it moving through my middle school. Both he and my mom are going to the Program Advisor training event coming up in October.

Next up is planning our school’s Fuel Up to Play 60 Kickoff event. I can’t wait! I have learned a lot from this experience, not only becoming a leader but also learning to use my communication and organizational skills. In addition, I am very grateful that Robyn from Midwest Dairy Council, is working behind the scenes to help me be successful. Just another reason for me to be honored to be a part of this great program!
