Starting FUTP 60 at My High School

Hey everybody, it’s Prescott your New Hampshire State Ambassador and I’m here to share the highs and lows of our FUTP 60 Kickoff event! Since this is the first year of having FUTP 60 at my high school, we decided to go with a campaign of building awareness to get FUTP 60 known throughout the school. As soon as we could, the leadership team and I went to each subject department to see if they would take part in a lesson relating to FUTP 60 on the week of the Club Fair. We planned to have a booth along with the Student Council and a meeting after the fair. Although we did have a few no’s, most of the teachers under the topics of Health and Wellness were willing to be a part of it and include information on FUTP 60 to their students! It was also great to have an awesome new Program Advisor for the high school to be able to help out. She was able to refine on her knowledge on why FUTP 60 is important to the students and the school and get some experience talking to other teachers about FUTP 60!

The biggest project that students participated in for FUTP 60 was a poster contest in the Business Department! The teachers gave an applied marketing/branding assignment using information we gave them about FUTP 60 and students made posters for FUTP 60 as a contest. The winner would get some FUTP 60 swag, which really motivated students to work hard on the project! The top three entries are shown in the photos. The High School Health Department held a day where students mapped out their nutrition and how they felt every day of the week, showing students that they need to eat balanced meals in order to reach their fullest potential every day! The P.E. department also took part by setting up challenges from the website that students could do for prizes in study hall.

Finally, the big day came with the Club Fair! Using the flyers from the contest and some swag, we shared with students why they should join FUTP 60. Although it was hard to get some students’ attention, because of the many other clubs there at the time, I think we did a good job telling students what they can expect when joining FUTP 60! I would definitely count this as a successful Kickoff. Not only because we got more students in the school involved in FUTP 60, but also on how it got the new student leaders of the program to experience a FUTP 60 event. This will prepare them for even bigger events in the future! In the end, it’s not the number of people that come to the first meeting the counts (although it does help), what really matters is getting kids exposed to this information on Healthy Eating and Physical Activity that they would never get!

That sums up our Kickoff! Although we did have some challenges, we collaborated with other school departments and worked as a team and pulled off a successful Kickoff event. We learned that if we take the time to plan and work together challenges don’t pose that big of a problem. Leave a comment telling what you did at your school for your FUTP 60 Kickoff event, and any challenges you faced!
