During the school year, students receive healthy and balanced meals from their school cafeteria. When school is over, eating healthy shouldn’t end (just as learning doesn’t), and with summer feeding programs we can help students eat healthier during the summer. A summer feeding program is a program that provides free, nutritious meals and snacks to help children who may not have access to healthy meals get the nutrition they need to learn, play, and grow, throughout the summer months.
During last school year I volunteered for a local elementary school near my neighborhood with a food drive, which gave the students’ families healthy food for the summer. One reason I volunteered was for SSl (Student Service Learning) hours, but another was because I wanted to help those families in need. At the end of the drive, the volunteers also got to take some food home for their families. I encourage you to prepare this school year to help students next summer as well!
