In celebration of National Walk to School Day on October 7, my Fuel Up to Play 60 team and I organized two walks throughout that day at my school.
To get the word out ahead of time to students, staff and parents, we made posters, posted on our FUTP 60 Instagram page and school Facebook page, sent school emails and I made announcements over the loudspeaker before school the day before and the day of.
Before school, we all met at the local fire department which is approximately one mile away from our school. The turnout was great and the beautiful weather certainly helped! We had lots of student participation as well as our school principal, Program Advisors, parents and even our school liaison police officer who gave us safety instructions before we set out on our trek to school.
Each student walker received a pedometer (kindly donated by one of our Program Advisors) and a FUTP 60 backpack tag. Once we arrived at school, all student participants were entered into a drawing for some great raffle prizes such as footballs, basketballs, and more, which were generously donated by a local business.
Later that same day we did an entire school walk during our ELT (study hall) time. We walked approximately 1/2 mile.
I hope this is the beginning of a new yearly tradition at my school and I was excited to help get it started!
