Karly 3I love being physically active and probably my favorite way to be physically active is playing softball.  Most of the time I play softball, I am the catcher. I would like to relate your new role as Fuel Up to Play 60 Ambassadors to some of my experiences on the softball field.

First of all, CONGRATS on making the team!

Being the catcher of a softball team comes with MANY responsibilities, each one just as important as the other; signaling pitches, relaying plays, bunt coverage, blocking wild pitches, throwing out runners attempting to steal and protecting home plate, are only a few.

Just as I have many responsibilities as a catcher, YOU have MANY responsibilities attached to your new role! Don’t let that scare you though. You obviously have what it takes to handle your new responsibilities and that is why you were chosen to represent Fuel Up to Play 60!Karly 1

As a catcher, I must be one of the team’s leaders.  I have the best view of the game because I have the entire field in front of me and I am the only player that doesn’t have my back turned to the field.  Therefore, I am able to call plays and let my team know what is going on.

I am guessing you have a view on how you would like to lead your school and state to be healthier!  As an Ambassador you are in the PERFECT position to call the plays and make that happen!!

Even though I am a leader of my softball team and I have many responsibilities, I am only ONE team member and I can’t win a game on my own. I have to rely on my teammates to do their part.

As an Ambassador, you will have responsibilities that are just for you, but make sure you involve others in your efforts!  Make sure you include other students, your Program Advisor and your local dairy council on your team!

I think of each game that I play as a new opportunity to learn and grow. There are always new things I can learn as a catcher from my coaches, teammates, and my opponents.

You are about to step into a year FULL of AMAZING opportunities! Some of my favorite opportunities this past year have been: the Student Ambassador Summit, hanging out with football players, making videos with an Olympic GOLD Medalist, and shaking hands with the GOVERNOR of my state when he signed my PROCLAMATIONS! These are just a few, but I LOVED and LEARNED from all of my Fuel Up to Play 60 opportunities!

Karly 2Some people simply ask me why I like to play catcher. Why I don’t mind having a softball thrown at me at excessive speeds, while wearing extra gear? Why I would want to spend most of the game squatting low to the ground while bats are being swung just inches from my face? Why I am willing to use my body as a wall to prevent a passed ball? The answer is simple, I LOVE what I do!

I HOPE as you take on your new role, you will LOVE what you do! You will most likely have good and bad days just like I have good and bad games, but I would encourage you not to give up. Do your BEST to use the AWESOME qualities you have to inspire others to be their best. PLAY YOUR HEART OUT and have the time of your life!

There are many wonderful things I could say about Karly, but as her former third grade teacher, I am tremendously proud of how well she writes!
