It was freshman year at Westchester Academy that I was introduced to Fuel Up To Play 60. In physical education classes, our coach was always looking for ways to get our school “Fueling Up.” Every student in PE class would log their meals and physical exercise, participate in challenges, and some students even assisted in conducting a health fair. In class, she educated us on healthy lifestyle habits and demonstrated that being healthy can be fun. Her passion about the program rubbed off on me. I, too, wanted to become more involved with Fuel Up to Play 60. I was aware of many schools in the district that could use some help kicking off their program. Midyear, I applied for student ambassador and later received my congratulatory packet for State Representative.

Now a sophomore at Stratford High School, I am working with my finance teacher to get Stratford “Fueling Up.” While still in our kickoff and funding phases, we have made excellent progress. Just before school let out for winter break, we received great news: our application for the $3,000 Healthy Lifestyles Grant had been approved!

2013 is a new year with new opportunities. With funding, we can now begin to accomplish some of our major goals, such as the creation of a school salad bar and the formation of a motivational pedometer step/walking/running program through WalkingSpree. A salad bar will incorporate more fresh fruits and vegetables into school lunches. The pedometer program allows students to compete against each other based on an uploaded step count (USB/wireless upload) with motivational prizes such as NFL gear. With this new year, Stratford is ready to get moving.
