Swan Valley Middle School (SVMS) has participated in Fuel Up to Play 60 for several years. Fuel Up to Play 60 challenges all our students to eat healthy. This program has resulted in many wonderful changes both with fitness and healthy eating. Jumping Jill started SVMS with a hilarious, yet fun dance that helped students (including boys) exercise to “The Beat of the Body.” Our school wide assembly included healthy eating habits shown through fitness activities with teachers, supported by staff as well as students. Detroit Lions player Tony Scheffler came to our school and participated in making smoothies with our new blender we won from Fuel Up to Play 60. After making smoothies, he went to a gym class and played dodge ball. It showed kids that they can look like Tony if they join in with those activities. SVMS participated in many healthy eating challenges. We made pita pizza which taught us eating pizza can be healthy. In one challenge we made egg sandwiches. Who knew healthy food could taste so good! We started our own challenge throughout our school where each grade had to come up with a healthy meal. Our 6th grade made salads, 7th made fruit parfaits and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches on whole wheat bread with organic peanut butter and jelly. Our 8th grade made the healthy pita pizzas.

Fuel Up to Play 60 is an amazing program that helps all of our Swan Valley Middle School students with nutrition and fitness. It helps them make everyday choices that lead them to a healthy lifestyle and will continue to throughout their life. When our school first started Fuel Up to Play 60, no one had a clue what it was but now every student wants to be a part of it and find a way to participate. Our Fuel Up to Play 60 team would personally like to thank Fuel Up to Play 60 for all they have done to help make our school healthy!
