Anisha Huddle Photo_11102014On October 28th, about sixty State and National Ambassadors and I were able to do something that not many others have. We talked to Chef Sam Kass from the White House and had the opportunity to ask him questions! What was so cool about that? He shared many different breakfast recipes with us! He also told us what President Obama’s favorite food was, almonds! Some of the things we talked about included breakfasts that we liked to eat, other things Mr. Kass does besides being a Chef at the White House like being the Let’s Move Executive Director and Senior Policy Advisor for Nutrition Policy, plus he listened to success stories we have had at our schools!

One of my favorite moments from the call was when he told us what the President likes to eat. Now we can brag to other kids that we know what the President likes to eat, and that it is just a cool fact! My other favorite moment was when I shared our “Veggie of the Month” program we do with our school and local grocery store. “Wow, that’s incredible!” was Mr. Kass’ reply. It felt great to hear that from him.

I think that it’s important that students talk with important people like Chef Kass, because he is a great resource when it comes to food and eating healthy. He gave us healthy and fun recipes to try at home. Another reason is because people like him give you excellent advice on things to try at your school. He was nice, caring, and had great ideas to share with us.

The call with Sam Kass was a great refresher of some of the ideas and plans I personally got to discuss with him back in September. We were given the chance to talk about some of the new ways that we’ve been successful in implementing healthy changes in our cafeterias and communities. Mr. Kass then gave feedback to each student and answered any questions that we had on nutrition and healthy eating.

It was a great opportunity to exchange ideas, and speaking to people like Sam Kass gives us an expert opinion on an issue that every Fuel Up to Play 60 Ambassador is working to address, nutrition in schools. With input from someone that works alongside the First Family, we’re getting the best advice and can voice our thoughts to a Senior Policy Advisor. Mr. Kass was able to teach us how to make school meals more appealing to students, engage positive youth voices, and overall lead effectively as Student Ambassadors.

Some of the things we talked about with Mr. Sam Kass were what food he makes for the President, what we eat for breakfast and how it fuels us up. We also discussed how we can get our 60 minutes of physical activity during the day with different ideas on how to Fuel Up to Play 60.  I think it is important for kids to be able to talk with Mr. Sam Kass about fueling up because he is the chef for the President. The President really likes nutritious foods, so Mr. Kass must like them too!  One of my favorite moments from the call was when Mr. Sam Kass came on the phone and talked about how he became the President’s chef.  Also I always enjoy hearing what all of the other Ambassadors say about what they do in their school.
