Karly S. and Hunter S. Governor's OfficeSchool breakfast is important to students like to me, because it not only helps fuel me for the day, but also helps me be a better student. There are millions of students across the country that aren’t starting their day with breakfast and this is a big issue that we need to fix!

With a little hard work, I’m happy to say that Idaho Governor Butch Otter will be signing a proclamation I wrote, making March 3 – March 7 Fuel Up to Play 60 School Breakfast Week in Idaho! Below are my tips on how to start the conversation and make this happen in your community too:

  • BE BRAVE! Reaching out to your local government leaders may sound scary and take you out of your comfort zone, but remember your local leaders care about their community.
  • BE THOUGHTFUL! Local leaders get many requests. Take the time needed to make your request thoughtful and meaningful.
  • DO YOUR RESEARCH! For example, I had no idea how to write a proclamation, so I looked up examples to get ideas. I even found some proclamation examples right on the governor’s website. Be sure to also look and see if there are requirements to contacting governor/mayor and make sure to follow these!
  • REACH OUT! One thing I have learned through all of this is that my local Dairy Council always has great advice and guidance – be sure to reach out to them for help.
  • GO FOR IT! Hit that submit button! Even if your local leader turns you down, the whole process will have taught you a LOT!

Remember if you want to help make a difference in your community, you have to KEEP TRYING! Fuel Up to Play 60 is worth taking a shot for – you miss 100% of the shots you never take!

So, how you can help support school breakfast?
