Hi everyone! My name is Heaven, and I am currently a State Ambassador for Louisiana. Recently, my principal chose me to be our school’s “Student of the Year”! In order for me to have been chosen, I had to maintain a 3.5 GPA or higher in grades 6, 7, and 8. I also had to show some kind of leadership roles and community service activities. I had to complete a portfolio which included all my accomplishments, leadership roles, and community service activities (including Fuel Up to Play 60!). After completing my portfolio, I was interviewed by my principal, assistant principal, and my school’s counselor. They asked me various questions about my future. Thankfully, I was trained on how to do interviews at last year’s Student Ambassador Summit (a big thanks to Ms. Alexis Glick from the GENYOUth Foundation for providing us with interview tips)! With this Summit training, I was able to make my interview a success.
After completing all of this, I had to wait a few more days until the results came in. When the results did finally come, my principal informed me that I won! A few weeks later, I was honored at my district’s School Board Meeting along with a few others. At the ceremony, they provided us with a small reception. They also presented to us a plaque and a Kindle PaperWhite! All in all, Fuel Up to Play 60 played a big role in me receiving this honor. Without me becoming involved in Fuel Up to Play 60 and attending the AWESOME Summit in 2013, I wouldn’t have improved my leadership as well as communication skills which was a great factor for choosing a winner.
