Congratulations to Reja and Maria, winners of the Touchdown Dance Challenge! Here’s their story:

This is Reja (Re-shay) and Maria from St. Louis. Recently we won the Touchdown Dance Challenge. The nurse at our school encouraged us to try it. She does a lot with Fuel Up to Play 60 at our school. First we had to pick the music. We chose what we thought was the most upbeat, almost hip hop song, from the available songs. We are both involved in cheerleading, so the dance moves were not too hard for us to come up with. We kept trying random things and listened to some advice from Reja’s sister and dad. He showed us some old touchdown moves.

The hard part was next. We needed to get lots of votes. The challenge ended after our school ended for the year. The school nurse sent e-mails to all the teachers and the principal posted messages on the school Facebook page. The local Patch e-newspaper also ran an article about the contest. We both sent out messages on our Facebook pages and told friends and family to vote.  At school, we handed out fliers to students. Luckily the voting was still going on when we went back to school, so we were able to get the word out more.

We were both extremely excited when we won. When we first made the video we didn’t think we would win, but did it because it was fun. Let’s just say there was screaming and jumping involved when we got the news. We got to carry a banner in a local parade proclaiming our win. That was pretty cool. We were out there in our cheerleading uniforms with pom poms and everything. It was worth all the work and stress. Practicing the dance was fun and a good physical activity. We got our school to work together to vote so they could be a part of our win, too. We are proud to be a part of a Fuel Up to Play 60 school.

Touchdown Dance winners! You guys are awesome! I know how hard it is to get people to vote and you guys were my competition and you made it easy! I even posted on YouTube and you guys were there. Great job on dance coordination, because I don’t know about you guys, but I had a lot of redos. You guys did great and this is a super cool picture! I can’t wait to see more from your school. I hope when I’m in middle school we will have the same success as you guys are having.

You look so cute!!! It looks like fun! Great job on your win and I can’t wait to see pictures of you showing the football player your moves. I helped my brother with votes on the touchdown shuffle and it was hard because school hadn’t begun and so we reached out to family and friends. I went to my brother’s meet the teacher night and we made a poster and he and I passed out flyers to every teacher to give to their students, we told our church, we posted on facebook, instagram, YouTube, twitter. We even asked the Florida Dairy Council, GENYOUth, and other groups to post to their twitter followers. You guys rock!!! Great way to network. I just started the program at my middle school with my science teacher and I hope we can build awareness as well as your school had managed. AWESOME!!!

These 2 girls are a couple of my daughters best friends and I have to say I am so incredibly proud of them. Not only did they have the courage to step out of their comfort zone and put their crazy dance on display for the camera they also worked hard to spread the word about voting to anyone that would listen. They are great girls and true examples of leadership and great character in our school and community. Great job Reja and Maria, so proud of you both!!
